Ingredients;

  • Tomatoes -400grams

  • Curry leaves -2 stems

  • One small onion -1

  • Garlic -1 or 2  Cloves

  • Turmeric -1 tsp

  • Tamarind Paste -1 tbsp

  • Toor daal (Lentils)- 1 Cup

  • Water -5 cups same cup you used to lentils

  • Green or red chillies (2)

  • Cumin seeds -1tsp

  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp

  • Olive oil -3 tbsp

  • Salt -1tsp

  • Coriander two stems for garnish

  • Ghee -1 tsp (optional)

  • Asafoetida(hing) -pinch (optional)

Tomato Daal

( Tomato Pappu )

Method;

  1. Wash the toor daal twice with plenty of water.

  2. Now add 5 cups of water same cup that you used for toor daal.

  3.  Switch the gas on with medium heat let the toor daal boil for 30 to 40 minutes till the lentils are smooth and well cooked.

  4. Soak a small block of tamarind in a warm water .Keep it on side for 10 mintues .After 10 mintues squeeze the tamarind to get a thick paste and remove the pulp .

  5. Now add chopped tomato,salt, chillies, turmeric, tamarind paste mix well keep cooking with low heat.

  6. In separate small pan heat the oil with medium heat .Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, chopped garlic, curry leaves, few chopped onions, asafoetida powder mix well and let it sizzle a bit until onions ,garlic fry slightly.

  7. When its ready switch off the gas and mix them all into cooked tomato pappu .let it all cook for 5 minutes .Switch the heat off.

  8. Garnish with coriander.

  9. Your yummy homemade tomato pappu is ready to taste.

 Tomato daal in our Telugu language .We call it Tomato Pappu its a traditional recipe in south India.Its my son and husband most liking dish.My son lakshman enjoys pappu(daal)with hot plain rice adding bit of Ghee. Its a most homely made comfort food in every  south Indian home.
